Florence

The first observation point is the famous Piazzale Michelangelo, a large terrace overlooking the whole center of Florence and the surrounding areas. It was built in 1869 by Giuseppe Poggi and is dedicated to the artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, whose David (a copy of the original) is exhibited in the center of the square. The view from the Piazzale will leave you breathless: from here, monuments such as the Ponte Vecchio, the medieval tower of Palazzo della Signoria, the Duomo with its bell tower or the church of Santa Croce can be embraced with a single glance! The square can be reached by car, but also on foot along the long staircase of the Rampe dei Poggi, which starts from Porta San Niccolò. Near Piazzale Michelangelo, don't forget to visit the famous cemetery and the church of San Miniato al Monte, one of the most important in the city! Climbing the steps of its marble staircase, you can enjoy another splendid view, especially at sunset.

Coming down from the square, you will find Giardino delle Rose, a beautiful place to relax surrounded by hundreds of flowers and plants. Once open only in spring, the Garden can be visited at any time of the year and allows you to admire another unmissable glimpse of all of Florence.

Going along via San Leonardo, you can come instead to a military fortress built in the 16th century by Buontalenti at the behest of the Grand Duke Ferdinando called Forte Belvedere. The building is located on the top of the Boboli hill and offers a suggestive view of the city, not to be missed in the summer months!

Not far from the Fort there is also another splendid vantage point, the Bardini Garden, also called “garden of the three gardens”. From the top of its imposing staircase, you can enjoy an incredible view of Florence, made even more beautiful in the months of April and May, when the colors of its historic monuments mix with the lilac flowers of the wisteria in bloom.

How not to mention the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore? This magnificent work was built by Filippo Brunelleschi between 1420 and 1436 and its dome is unique in the world. After 464 steps, you will be able to reach its highest point and admire both the huge building from the inside, and a breathtaking view over Florence from 91 meters high!

On the south side of the Cathedral there is also the Giotto's Bell Tower, another beautiful panoramic point from which you can enjoy a fantastic view. This tower is 85 meters high and you need to climb more than 400 steps to reach the top!

Another recommended destination is the Torre di Arnolfo, which is located inside the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria. Ideal for history lovers, the Tower also allows visitors to see the patrol walkways used by the palace guards to guard the city in the Middle Ages.

The last point not to be missed is the least touristy, but no less fascinating. This is the terrace of the library of the Oblates, a building located near the Duomo which is so suggestive that it feels like touching the dome with your hand. Popular with students, it is the perfect place to read and study immersed in the beauty of this unique city.
